How to Manage Anxiety Before Your First IVF Consultation

Your first IVF consultation can feel like a really big step.

You might have spent months or even years trying to conceive before reaching this point. There may have already been appointments, tests, waiting and difficult conversations. And now suddenly you’re sitting down to talk about IVF.

It’s completely understandable if you feel nervous.

You might be hopeful that you’re finally moving forward, while also feeling scared about what you’re going to hear. You might have a hundred questions running through your mind — or feel like you don’t even know what you should be asking.

You don’t need to arrive at your first IVF consultation feeling calm, positive or prepared for everything.

But there are a few things that may help you feel a little more supported going into it.

Write down your questions beforehand

It’s surprisingly easy to forget everything you wanted to ask once you’re sitting in the consultation room.

In the days before your appointment, keep a note on your phone and add questions whenever they pop into your head.

There are no silly questions. If something is worrying you, confusing you or you simply want to understand it better, write it down.

You don’t need to remember everything in the moment.

And if you're attending with a partner, you could both make a list. They may have completely different questions or concerns to you.

Remember that you don’t have to take everything in

Your first IVF consultation can involve a lot of information.

Tests, medication, timelines, treatment protocols, success rates, procedures… it can feel like a completely new language at first.

Try not to put pressure on yourself to understand or remember everything immediately.

Take notes if that helps. Ask the consultant to explain something again. Ask what happens next.

It’s okay if you leave the appointment and realise you still have questions.

IVF is a lot to process, and you’re allowed time to get your head around it.

Try not to plan the entire journey before it has started

This was something I found incredibly difficult during infertility.

Your mind can race so far ahead.

What if IVF doesn’t work? What if we don’t get any embryos? How many rounds will we need? What if something goes wrong?

Before you know it, you’re mentally living through situations that haven't happened.

If you notice yourself doing this before your consultation, gently bring yourself back to the step you're actually at.

Right now, you only need to get through this appointment.

You don't need to work out the whole IVF journey today.

Give yourself a few minutes to breathe before you go in

You don't need a complicated routine to help yourself feel a little more grounded.

Even a few minutes sitting quietly and paying attention to your breathing can give you something to focus on other than all the thoughts racing through your mind.

Try allowing your exhale to become a little longer than your inhale, without forcing your breath or trying to make yourself feel a certain way.

The aim isn't to make your anxiety disappear.

It's simply to give yourself a few moments to pause before walking into the appointment.

Make space for however you feel afterwards

If you can, try not to rush straight back into normal life after your consultation.

You might leave feeling relieved and hopeful. You might feel overwhelmed. You might have more questions than you arrived with.

Or you might feel absolutely exhausted by the whole thing.

There isn't a right way to feel.

Give yourself permission to process the appointment in whatever way you need to.

That might mean talking everything through with your partner, going for a walk, writing down your thoughts or simply going home and doing something completely unrelated to fertility for a while.

You don't have to feel positive about IVF all the time

Starting IVF can bring hope, but hope doesn't cancel out fear.

You can feel grateful that treatment is available to you and wish you didn't need it.

You can feel hopeful about what might happen and terrified that it won't work.

You can be ready to start and still feel completely overwhelmed by it.

There is space for all of those feelings.

You don't need to force yourself into a positive mindset before your consultation. You just need to meet yourself where you are.

A little support before your appointment

If you have your first IVF consultation coming up, be gentle with yourself.

This is a big step, and you don't have to navigate every part of it perfectly.

Inside Calm Conception, I've created a short Before a Fertility Appointment breathing practice for exactly these moments. You can press play before you leave home, in the car or somewhere quiet before your appointment and take a few minutes to breathe and ground yourself.

You'll also find on-demand fertility yoga, meditation, breathwork and emotional support for the waiting, appointments and difficult days that can come with infertility and IVF.

Because sometimes you don't need another thing to do to get pregnant. You just need somewhere supportive to turn while you're going through it.
